Supplies

Yarn Recommendations:

When selecting a yarn for knitting socks, you want to choose one with a nylon, or polyamide, or polyester percentage (20-30%) in the composition. This will allow for durability in your knitted socks. You may choose to use a merino or wool, or a cotton option.

Typically, sock patterns are written for a 4 ply, or fingering weight sock yarn. You may choose a heavier weight sock pattern, in which case, you may be choosing a 6ply or 8 ply sock yarn (DK weight).

Sock options from Makers Lodge:

  1. Laines du Nord – Paint Gradient, Watercolor Sock, or Paint Sock (Merino/Nylon, Fingering Weight)
  2. Malabrigo – Ultimate Sock (Merino/Nylon, Fingering Weight)
  3. Manos del Uruguay – Alegria (Superwash Merino/Nylon, fingering weight)
  4. Confetti Yarns – Hand Dyed Sock (Merino/Nylon, fingering weight)
  5. Juniper Moon Farm – Herriot Fine (Alpaca/Nylon, fingering weight)
  6. Comfort Sock – 4 ply Sock (Superwash wool/polyamid, fingering weight)
  7. Gedifra – Lana Mia Cotone (Cotton/Polyester, fingering weight)
  8. Laines du Nord – Summer Sock (Cotton/Nylon, fingering weight)
  9. King Cole – Summer (Bamboo/Cotton/PBT, fingering weight)
  10. Uneek Sock Kit (Superwash Merino/Nylon, fingering weight)
  11. Seawater Weaving Hand dyed Sock Yarns (Merino/Nylon, fingering weight)
  12. KFI Luxury Collection – Indulgence Merino (Mercerized Merino/Polyamide, DK weight)
  13. Comfort – 6 ply (Wool/Polyamide/Viscose, DK weight)
  14. Comfort – 8 ply (Wool/Polyamide, DK weight)

Knitting Needles:

A big part of becoming successful in sock knitting is finding the needle style that is right for you.

We have several needle options available in studio, and here are the 4 categories we carry.

  1. Double Pointed Needles (DPNs)
  2. 9″ or 10″ circular needles
  3. 32″ or 40″ circular needles (For Magic loop)
  4. 16″ circular needles (you would need 2 of these)

Fabric Recommendations:

Bucket Hats:

For bucket hat sewing, you will want to select stable fabrics without a lot of drape. Cottons, and linens work well, and are a breathable option.

Some great options here at Makers Lodge:

  1. Ramie Linen, or Ramie Stonewashed Linen
  2. Quilting Cottons
  3. Katia Fabrics – Cotton Poplin
  4. Recycled Canvas

Beanies:

When sewing beanies, a medium thickness stretch fabric is great. You will need at least 50% stretch, and the stretchier the better!

Some great options at Makers Lodge:

  1. Tubular Ribbing (2×2)
  2. Bamboo/Cotton Ribbing
  3. Bamboo/Cotton jersey
