Yarn POM
This February, we want to encourage our knitters to continue exploring colourwork, while keeping warm. We will be making colourwork cowls for February’s yarn POM!
We’ve selected 3 different patterns with different styles of colourwork, so knitters can choose which style they’re more interested in or would like to challenge themselves with – or you could make all 3. We’ve chosen patterns that use either mosaic, stranded, or 2 colour fisherman’s rib techniques for colourwork.
The Shift:
This cowl is knit flat and seamed at the back to create a beautiful, cozy cowl. Using a mosaic colourwork technique, only 1 colour is worked at a time along with slip stitches to create a unique look. We recommend choosing 2 solid colours with 1 variegated colour for your cowl. This pattern is beginner friendly, and a great introduction into colourwork without the need to work with 2 colours at the same time.
Above: Tania used Manos del Urugauy Sami in Khol and Driftwood, and Marla in Dark Moss.
Above: Mel used Estelle Yarns – Highland Alpaca DK in Brick and Olive, and Malabrigo – Arroyo in a single lot colour (the closest colourway to this single lot would be Arco Iris).
Ombeline Cowl:
This cowl is knit in the round using stranded colourwork techniques. Only 2 colours are worked at a time, making managing your colours and carrying floats easier. While this project could get a bit tangly (as with any other stranded colourwork project), it offers a fun and quick knit to improve your colourwork skills, and practice carrying your floats over a longer distance!
Above: Christine is using Mokosh in Andaluza Grey and Hawthorne Pink. We highly recommend Hey Mama Wolf – Mokosh for this project to give your colourwork fantastic definition.
Two-Color Cotton Cowl:
While not necessary to use cotton for this pattern, we selected it as it features a two colour fisherman’s rib stitch. Only 1 colour is worked at a time in horizontal lines (you change colours each row), but the stitch used results in colourwork stripes that appear vertical. Due to its similar appearance to brioche, fisherman’s rib offers an excellent way to dip your toes into the world of brioche for those interested in learning brioche but who may be intimidated. While brioche has more steps and abbreviations involved, fisherman’s rib uses a knit 1 below/purl 1 below to create a similar texture (though not identical) to brioche.
Above: Katherine used Manos del Uruguay Sami in Bing Cherry and Marla in Caramel.
Sewing POM
We’ve chosen a simple but classic mitten pattern for February’s POM. These mittens are easy to sew up, so are perfect for sewists of any experience level. This pattern lends itself well to colourblocking, and can be further customized by adding embroidered or needle felted embellishments.
Christine made these Simple Felted Wool Mittens using Wool Boucle in Redwood (main colour) and Dark Grey (palm).
Scrappy Wool Coasters
We’ve also put together a little sewing pattern for hand-sewing coasters out of your left over wool boucle scraps. These will make the perfect addition to any living room, or a great gift. Individually, the coasters take very little time to make, and the best part is they only use scraps!
Find our pattern on the Makers Lodge blog – here.
