Yarn POM

Following the theme of experimenting with new techniques and getting comfortable with new skills, this month we will be learning fantastic techniques with hats! We’ve got 2 techniques in store for you this month: brioche knitting or a right twist stitch. Hats are an excellent opportunity to learn new skills given their usually simple construction and smaller size. We’ve chosen 2 brioche patterns, each with a different yarn weight and different construction/style. Brioche knitting can be challenging to learn, but the payoff is worth it. Due to this, we would recommend the brioche patterns to an intermediate level knitter. If you are an advanced or adventurous beginner, we would recommend the super bulky right twist stitch hat as a perfect place to start exploring new stitches and techniques, while still looking fabulous and cozy.

Harlow (brioche knitting):

This brioche hat is perfect for learning brioche. Using 2 colour brioche techniques makes it easier for the knitter to identify which row they are on. This beanie has a simple construction as well, allowing knitters to focus on perfecting their brioche stitches. This hat is knit using fingering weight yarn.

Majorna (brioche knitting):

This brioche hat features a triple brim, providing the wearer with extra warmth on those chilly days. With a more complex construction along with a single colour brioche stitch, this pattern is suitable for confident intermediate knitters and beyond. The simplistic, fitted look of this hat is trendy and functional, and lends itself perfectly to colourblocking. Worked in a DK weight yarn, this hat knits up in no time – even with the triple brim!

This pattern can be easily adjusted to 2 colour brioche by simply alternating colours each row of the brioche stitch pattern. Keep in mind that if you choose to make this change, you should use your main colour on the knit row of the brioche.

Above: We highly recommend Mode at Rowan in Alpaca Wool held with Alpaca Haze for this project. Katherine used Alpaca Wool in Olive and Alpaca Haze in Khaki held together (brim), and Alpaca Wool in Walnut and Alpaca Haze in Cocoa held together (top).

Above: Katherine also made a Majorna hat using Lily and Pine Aspen Worsted in Concrete Jungle (brim) and Sand Dollar (top).

Gales of November (super bulky right twist stitch):

This pattern works up super quickly – that’s the beauty of super bulky yarn! The right twist stitch used throughout this hat gives the illusion of a much more complex knit. The right twist stitch builds off of skills that beginner knitters already have, making this an easy stitch to learn and perfect. Cozy and quick, this hat is perfect in every way. Add a pompom for even more floof and coziness!

This pattern is written for super bulky (6) weight yarn, but can be modified for a light super bulky yarn.

Above: Mel used Manos del Uruguay Franca in Camelot.

Sewing POM

We love a unique accessory, and there’s no better way to accomplish this than to make your very own! This pattern features an interesting construction and a curved gusset, but is suitable for confident or adventurous beginners.

This pouch pattern has excellent options for customizing – colourblock, add some embroidery, and make it with your choice of pocket and strap options.  These bags are aesthetically pleasing, functional, and a joy to make!

If you fall in love with this, don’t worry! You can complete your set with the accompanying tote pattern, and be the envy of all your friends and relations!

Above: Woven Viscose Linen Solids – Off White (left) with Camp Woodland – Moths (right)

If you’re looking to add some embroidery to your pouch, we highly recommend either our Ramie Linen or Woven Viscose Linen Solids for this part. Both are a treat to work with and there is a variety of colours in stock to choose from.
